Vintage Japanese Kamidana Shinto Shrine, Showa Era (SKU 25D-314-4)

Showa-era kamidana miniature shrine with warm natural wood and finely stepped entrance

This vintage Japanese Shinto shrine, or kamidana, is crafted in light natural wood with a serene, unvarnished finish that recalls the purity of traditional shrine architecture. The façade features sliding double doors framed by carved transom details and small chrysanthemum-like rosettes, evoking the refined joinery of mid-Showa household altars.

A raised veranda with twin stairways, balustrades, and a tiered roofline crowned by stylized chigi and katsuogi give this piece strong presence while remaining compact enough for display on a shelf or alcove. Ideal as a functioning kamidana for enshrining an ofuda, or as a decorative accent for a wabi-sabi or Japan-inspired interior, it offers an authentic glimpse into everyday Shinto practice.

  • Origin: Japan
  • Era: Showa period (mid 20th century)
  • Material: Natural unfinished softwood (likely hinoki or similar)
  • Use: Household Shinto kamidana altar for enshrining talismans or as a decorative shrine
  • Features: Tiered roof with chigi and katsuogi, carved transom panel, twin staircases with railings, sliding double doors, raised veranda, warm light-wood patina
  • Dimensions: 14 1/2"W x 9"D x 19"H
  • Condition: Excellent vintage condition with minor wear and small age marks consistent with use

A charming Showa-era shrine that brings a quiet, sacred presence and authentic Japanese craftsmanship into any space.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
