A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box designed to keep needlework tools neatly organized and close at hand. This exceptional example combines a compact multi-drawer chest with a distinctive side tower -- a format favored by skilled sewers of the Showa period who needed quick access to needles, thread, thimbles, and measuring tools all in one place. The lower chest features several pull-out drawers in a graduated arrangement, one of the top drawers fitted with an interior divider for small notions, all sliding with satisfying precision on hand-fitted wooden runners. Each drawer is fitted with a cast metal ring pull in a gracefully shaped escutcheon, finished in blackened iron for a refined, understated look. The upright tower rises from the right side of the chest, its bracket-arm supporting a lidded pincushion box lined with a vivid red cushion -- a signature feature of the finest haribako -- with a small knob-pull drawer below for thimbles or spare needles, and a narrow slot in the tower shaft sized for a ruler or folding measure. The wood throughout displays a bold, open grain consistent with keyaki (zelkova) or a similarly figured Japanese hardwood, warm amber-brown in tone with richly swirling figure on the drawer fronts.
