Vintage Japanese Haribako sewing and accessory box, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26J-0473
A richly figured hardwood haribako with lift-top lid, interior tray, and multiple front drawers -- handcrafted Japanese storage at its most elegant.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing or accessory box designed to keep needles, thread, pins, and small notions neatly organized within arm's reach. This vintage Japanese craft piece dates to the Late Showa era and showcases an exceptionally bold, wavy grain across every exterior surface -- consistent with a highly figured Japanese hardwood, possibly sen (castor aralia) or kaki (persimmon), finished to a warm honey-amber tone. The construction is sturdy and well-proportioned, with softly rounded corners giving the piece a refined, almost sculptural quality. Decorative cast metal pulls with a pierced floral motif adorn each drawer, adding a delicate traditional accent that contrasts beautifully with the dramatic wood figure. This is the kind of handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture that rewards close inspection -- every panel a slightly different expression of the same remarkable grain.
In a modern home, this haribako is remarkably versatile. On a bedroom vanity or dresser top, it makes a stunning jewelry box and accessories organizer -- the lift-top lid reveals a fitted shallow interior tray with a removable sub-compartment, ideal for rings, earrings, or small pendants, while the multiple front drawers provide generous layered storage for bracelets, watches, or cosmetics. It works equally well as a home office desk organizer, corralling stationery, USB drives, and everyday essentials with Japandi-style calm. Its compact footprint and warm wood tones suit minimalist decor, wabi-sabi interiors, and mid-century modern settings alike. A truly unique gift for collectors or Japanophiles, it brings both beauty and function to any room.
