Japanese Haribako Sewing Box | Vintage Jewelry Box & Desk Organizer, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-827
A masterwork of yosegi-zukuri marquetry -- handcrafted Japanese craft box alive with geometric inlay and auspicious motifs.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box used to organize needles, thread, thimbles, and other handcraft tools. This exceptional example goes far beyond everyday utility: its exterior is entirely clad in yosegi-zukuri marquetry -- the celebrated craft of Hakone in which thin veneers of contrasting woods are assembled into geometric patterns and then sliced into surface panels. A bold checkerboard of warm honey and deep amber tones wraps every face of the box, punctuated by finely inlaid medallions: a diamond-shaped asanoha (hemp-leaf) lattice on the front, a hexagonal asanoha roundel on each side, an origami crane on the drawer fronts, and a gourd -- a traditional symbol of good fortune -- adorning the side panel. The hinged lid showcases a breathtaking patchwork of multiple yosegi patterns across its surface, each panel filled with a different micro-geometric design. Inside the lid, a pierced fretwork panel depicts flying birds in graceful silhouette -- a delicate touch of sculptural artistry rarely seen in a functional sewing box. The unfinished interior reveals clean, smooth hardwood construction with multiple divided compartments in the upper tray and pull-out drawers below, all sliding with satisfying precision. This is a museum-quality piece of vintage Japanese craft.
In a modern home, this haribako is far too beautiful to hide away. Set it on a bedroom dresser as a jewelry box -- the divided interior tray is perfectly sized for rings, earrings, and bracelets, while the pull-out drawers keep larger pieces tidy. On a home office desk it serves as an elegant desk organizer for stationery, business cards, or small treasures. It also makes a stunning living room accent in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic display, placed on a shelf or side table as a sculptural conversation piece. With its rich craftsmanship and iconic Japanese motifs, it is a truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors and Japanophiles who appreciate handcrafted Japanese antique furniture and decorative boxes.
