Japanese Haribako Sewing Box | Vintage Jewelry Box & Desktop Organizer, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-994-2
A spectacular burled hardwood haribako with stacked drawers, a hinged lid compartment, and removable interior trays -- handcrafted Japanese antique storage at its finest.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box used by women to store needles, thread, scissors, and other needlework tools. This exceptional example, dating to the Late Showa period (1966-1989), is crafted from a richly figured burled hardwood -- most likely kaki (persimmon) or a similarly dramatic Japanese species -- whose swirling, flame-like grain covers every exterior surface in a breathtaking natural pattern. The top lid opens on metal hinges to reveal a fitted interior compartment housing removable lightweight wood trays, including a subdivided insert designed to keep small tools neatly separated. Below, multiple pull-out drawers in a staggered stepped layout -- including a taller side drawer alongside a column of shallower drawers and one deeper full-width lower drawer -- provide generous and well-organized storage. Each drawer is fitted with a delicate diamond-shaped brass pull, a hallmark of the refined handcrafted Japanese craft aesthetic of the era. The plain-grain secondary wood used for the drawer interiors and trays provides a pleasing contrast to the spectacular figured exterior veneer.
Today, this stunning vintage Japanese sewing box is just as useful as it is beautiful. Its generous multi-drawer layout makes it a natural jewelry box or vanity organizer for a bedroom, where each drawer can house rings, bracelets, earrings, and accessories with ease. On a home office desk, it serves equally well as a desktop organizer for stationery, pens, and small supplies -- a unique statement piece that elevates any Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. It also makes a remarkable housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture who appreciate both artistry and function. Whether displayed on a dresser, side table, or writing desk, this haribako brings warmth, history, and an extraordinary grain pattern into any modern home.
