This Japanese haribako sewing box combines practical storage with boldly decorative carving. The exterior is covered in an all-over hand-worked scale pattern, while the drawer fronts are united by a large peony blossom and bud rendered in raised relief. The finish has the characteristic visual contrast associated with Kamakura-bori style work, with deep red highlights over a dark ground that accentuate the carved surface. The top opens to reveal a removable compartmentalized tray suited to sewing tools and small notions, while the drawers below provide additional organized storage. Slender dark pulls and light natural wood interiors complete the piece with a pleasing contrast between ornate exterior and functional interior.
