Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Chest, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26J-0781-1
A compact Japanese haribako sewing chest in richly grained wood, fitted with a lift-top compartment and multiple drawers for sewing tools and small essentials.
This vintage Japanese haribako is a personal-scale sewing chest made for keeping needlework supplies neatly arranged in one place. The form combines a top compartment with an asymmetrical drawer layout below, offering practical separation for threads, small tools, fabric notions, and other sewing necessities. Its compact proportions make it easy to place on a shelf, worktable, or beside a tatami workspace while still providing useful interior organization.
The exterior is especially striking for its dramatic figured grain and warm reddish-brown finish, with darker side panels and a simple molded base. The front is arranged with two small left drawers, a small right drawer with a round knob pull, and a wider lower drawer with a bail handle. Additional bail handles on the left drawers and inset metal fittings on the top reinforce its handcrafted character. In a modern home, this piece works beautifully as a sewing accessory organizer, craft-room accent, or decorative storage piece for small household items, bringing warmth and quiet character to a shelf or tabletop.
