Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Box, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26M-573
A striking Early Showa-era haribako sewing box in boldly figured hardwood, with a hinged lid compartment, multiple pull-out drawers, and beautifully aged metal handles.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box used to store needles, thread, fabric tools, and small personal items. This handsome vintage example dates to the Early Showa period (1927-1945), a time when Japanese household objects often blended practical traditional forms with refined modern design. The front is faced with a dramatically figured hardwood showing rich amber, golden brown, and deep black grain patterns, creating a naturally painterly surface across the drawers and upper compartment. The darker lacquered frame and side panels provide a strong contrast, giving the piece a clean, elegant presence.
The top opens on hinges to reveal a long storage compartment with light-toned interior wood and fitted dividers, ideal for organizing smaller sewing tools or keepsakes. Below the lid are multiple pull-out drawers arranged in a compact stepped layout, each fitted with a slender metal bar pull. The drawer interiors are constructed from lighter secondary wood, showing the practical and careful craftsmanship typical of Japanese vintage storage pieces. With its compact tabletop size and beautiful wood grain, this haribako is both functional and highly decorative.
In a modern home, this vintage Japanese sewing box works beautifully as a jewelry box, accessory organizer, desktop storage chest, or small keepsake cabinet. Place it on a bedroom dresser or vanity for rings, earrings, watches, and personal items; use it in a home office to organize stationery, cards, and small tools; or display it as a sculptural accent in a Japandi, wabi-sabi, rustic, or mid-century inspired interior. Its dramatic natural grain and Early Showa character make it a distinctive gift for collectors of Japanese craft, vintage sewing objects, or antique small furniture.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
