This vintage example, dating to the early Showa period (1927-1945), is hand-cast in heavy iron and formed in the classic pagoda silhouette -- a four-sided body topped by a sweeping, upturned-eave roof with a cast tile texture and a boldly modeled round finial at its crown. Each side panel is worked in deep relief openwork depicting a ryu (dragon) coiling through stylized clouds, a motif long associated with protection, power, and auspicious fortune in Japanese decorative arts.
