Vintage Japanese Brass Toro Lantern, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26J-0381

A finely wrought hexagonal toro lantern in aged brass, adorned with reticulated chrysanthemum panels and a lotus-petal roof -- a luminous relic of Japanese Buddhist craft.

A toro is a traditional Japanese lantern used to offer light at a Buddhist altar, home shrine, or ceremonial setting. This hexagonal example is constructed entirely in brass with a deep, richly oxidized patina that speaks to decades of reverent use. The open-work body is composed of framed panels pierced with bold chrysanthemum (kiku) motifs -- a symbol of longevity and refinement deeply embedded in Japanese decorative tradition -- set above a lower register of finely cut seigaiha (wave-scale) lattice. The domed lid is engraved across its surface and encircled by a flared corona of outswept lotus petals, each chased with scrolling cloud and floral detail. A gourd-form finial rises from the crown, threaded through a sturdy iron carrying ring that allowed the lantern to be hung or transported. The bulbous multi-lobed base rests on small bun feet and is finished with riveted brass cartouche fittings, consistent with quality altar metalwork produced during the early Showa period. Every element -- from the riveted frame construction to the layered openwork -- reflects the meticulous hand of a skilled Japanese metalsmith.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese toro makes a striking living room accent or meditation space focal point. Styled on a low shelf or alcove in a wabi-sabi or Japandi interior, it draws the eye with its warm bronze tones and intricate silhouette. Place a battery-operated tea light inside to create dramatic dappled light through the openwork panels -- a beautiful candlelight lantern effect with no open flame required. It also works as a decorative entryway accent on a console table, or as a collector's display piece on a bookshelf alongside other vintage Japanese metalwork. A thoughtful and unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese vintage pieces with genuine history and presence.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
