Vintage Japanese Andon Lantern Lamp, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26M-998-2

A handcrafted andon lantern lamp with calligraphy washi panels -- warm ambient light steeped in Early Showa character.

An andon is a traditional Japanese lantern lamp consisting of a wooden frame fitted with washi (Japanese paper) panels to diffuse candlelight or, in later periods, electric bulbs. This vintage example features a darkly stained wood frame -- squared uprights, a distinctive top carrying handle, and a sturdy rectangular base -- all constructed in the clean, restrained style favored during the militarist-era Early Showa period. Each of the four sides is fitted with a warm terracotta-toned washi panel densely printed with flowing cursive calligraphy script, lending the piece the feel of a literary artifact as much as a lighting fixture. The joinery is tight and confident, the blackened finish deepened handsomely with age. A working electric cord exits from the base, confirming the lamp has been electrified and is ready for use as a vintage Japanese craft object in any modern interior.

Today this andon makes a striking living room accent or bedroom decor statement, casting a soft amber glow through its calligraphy washi panels and filling any room with a wabi-sabi aesthetic that no mass-produced lamp can replicate. Set it on a side table or low credenza for Japandi style bedside lighting, position it in a home office as a focused mood light, or place it in an entryway as a sculptural conversation piece that greets guests with handwritten poetry. It would make a memorable gift for collectors of Japanese vintage lighting, or as a unique housewarming gift for lovers of Asian-inspired interior design.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
