Japanese Flower Vase | Vintage Living Room Accent & Ikebana Display, 1946-1965 (Mid Showa), SKU 26M-510-3

A handwoven bamboo-wrapped kabin (flower vase) -- a rare Mid Showa art object sold with its original presentation box.

A kabin is a traditional Japanese flower vase used in ikebana arrangements and tokonoma (alcove) displays throughout the home. This striking example features a cylindrical dark-lacquered vessel fully encased in a tight, open-lattice weave of pale honey-toned bamboo strips, a technique that creates dramatic geometric shadow play while protecting the inner vessel. The bamboo strips are interlaced in a bold diagonal pattern and gathered at the neck with a knotted bamboo tie -- a detail that reveals confident, practiced hands. This style of woven bamboo overlay, known in craft circles as take-zaiku, was prized during the Mid Showa era as a refined expression of mingei (folk craft) sensibility applied to fine decorative objects. The piece retains its original printed gift box labeled in brushwork calligraphy, confirming its status as a presentation-quality Japanese antique craft item.

Today this vase is as versatile as it is beautiful. Stand it upright on a living room shelf or entryway console and fill it with dried pampas grass, seasonal branches, or a single stem for an effortless wabi-sabi aesthetic. Its sculptural lattice form makes it equally compelling as a standalone decorative accent with nothing inside -- a natural conversation piece in a Japandi style interior. It also works beautifully as a gift for collectors or as a unique housewarming gift for anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese art. The included original box adds gift-ready presentation straight out of the package.

A beautifully handcrafted piece of vintage Japanese decorative art that brings the quiet elegance of the wabi-sabi aesthetic into any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
