Japanese Ikebana Vase | Vintage Flower Arranging Vessel & Living Room Accent, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-634-2
A boldly textured stoneware vessel in a full globular form -- handcrafted for the Japanese art of ikebana flower arrangement.
An ikebana vase is a vessel designed specifically for ikebana, the centuries-old Japanese art of mindful flower arrangement that emphasizes asymmetry, negative space, and the natural beauty of each stem. This handcrafted Japanese antique pottery piece takes the form of a generous, nearly spherical globe with a compact circular opening at the crown -- a classic silhouette well suited to anchoring loose, naturalistic ikebana compositions. The entire outer surface is covered in closely spaced horizontal throwing lines left deliberately unsmoothed, giving the stoneware a raw, tactile quality that embodies the wabi-sabi aesthetic. The clay body fires to warm sand and ochre tones, with subtle russet variations across the surface where the iron-rich clay has reacted to heat. The foot ring is neatly turned, and the unglazed exterior allows the natural character of the stoneware to speak for itself -- a hallmark of the mingei (folk craft) sensibility that strongly influenced Japanese studio pottery during the Late Showa period.
This vintage Japanese pottery vase transitions effortlessly into a modern home. Displayed on a shelf, sideboard, or entryway console, it functions as a living room accent that pairs beautifully with Japandi style and minimalist decor -- its earthy tones complementing natural linen, raw wood, and muted ceramics. Fill it with a single branch or a cluster of dried pampas grass for an understated ikebana arrangement, or leave it empty as a sculptural object in its own right. Its compact, rounded profile also makes it a striking bedroom decor accent on a nightstand or dresser. A wonderful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique pottery and studio ceramics.
