Vintage Japanese Cha Tansu Tea Chest, Mid-Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-C029

A handsome mid-century cha tansu with sliding-door compartments, drawers, open shelving, and decorative cutout side panels in a warm brown finish.

A cha tansu is a traditional Japanese tea chest designed to organize tea wares and household serving items, and this mid-Showa example presents that classic multi-compartment format in an especially attractive, compact form. The facade combines several useful storage types: a pair of small sliding doors across the upper section, a taller single hinged door at upper right, a broad open shelf at center, a lower sliding-door compartment, two small drawers to one side, and two long drawers at the base. The asymmetrical arrangement, shaped apron, and gently projecting top corners give the piece a distinctive silhouette, while the carved decorative cutouts on the sides and interior partition add visual lightness.

In a modern home, this vintage Japanese tea chest works beautifully as a compact storage cabinet or display piece. Use it in a dining area for tea accessories, linens, and small serving pieces; in a living room for books and decorative objects; or in an entryway to keep everyday essentials neatly arranged. Its varied compartments make it especially appealing for collectors who appreciate functional furniture with character and traditional Japanese design details.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
