A distinctive blue-and-white ceramic pillow with bold figural decoration and an architectural rectangular form.
This vintage Japanese ceramic pillow is made in a compact rectangular form with a gently flattened top and openwork ends. The body is decorated in cobalt blue on a white ground, with mythic animal medallions framed by floral diaper patterning and geometric key borders. One side features a large arched opening into the hollow interior, while the opposite end is pierced with multiple apertures for airflow. The overall construction and vented hollow body are characteristic of ceramic pillows made for practical household use as well as display. Visible age wear, glaze crazing, and rubbing along the edges are consistent with honest vintage character.
Today this piece works beautifully as a blue-and-white decorative accent on a bookshelf, cabinet, or tabletop. Its compact scale and unusual form make it a conversation piece for collectors of Japanese ceramics, folk objects, and traditional domestic wares. It can also be styled as a sculptural object in a layered interior with chinoiserie, Japandi, or eclectic vintage decor.
An unusual and highly decorative vintage ceramic pillow that brings graphic blue-and-white pattern, historic charm, and collectible character to any interior.
We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.
All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
