Vintage Japanese Kozara Porcelain Dish, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26J-0499-1
A hand-painted blue-and-gold landscape dish capturing the quiet beauty of the Japanese countryside in mid-century porcelain.
A kozara is a small, shallow Japanese dish traditionally used at the table to serve condiments, pickles, or bite-sized portions alongside a larger meal. This vintage example is rendered in white porcelain with a gently curved profile and a well-defined foot ring, giving it an elegant, refined presence consistent with quality mid-Showa Japanese ceramic production. The interior is painted in soft underglaze blue with gold (gilt) accents, depicting a classic sansui -- mountain landscape -- scene: rolling peaks recede into an open sky, a gnarled pine stretches across the composition, craggy rocks anchor the foreground, and a thatched pavilion sits quietly among cedar-like trees. The gold detailing traces the roofline, the contours of the rocks, and the sweep of the shoreline, adding warmth and depth to the cool blue palette. A fine gold line runs along the rim, completing the composition with understated refinement.
In a modern home, this kozara is as versatile as it is beautiful. Use it as a living room accent piece -- a small display dish on a bookshelf or console table -- or place it on a vanity as a ring dish or jewelry holder. It also makes a charming catch-all on a home office desk for paper clips, a watch, or other small items. Its Japandi-style palette of muted blue, warm gold, and clean white works naturally alongside both minimalist decor and more collected, eclectic interiors. The exterior features a bold blue seigaiha (wave-scale) band encircling the foot ring, with scattered treasure motifs painted in blue and gilt -- details that make this dish equally beautiful displayed face-down. A faint blue mark is visible on the foot ring base, though it is not fully legible. This piece makes a thoughtful and unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese ceramics.
