Vintage Japanese Shishi Koro Incense Burner, Early Showa (1927-1945) | SKU: 26M-795
A boldly sculpted koro in the form of a shishi guardian beast -- richly glazed stoneware on a lacquered wood stand
A koro is a traditional Japanese incense burner, and this exceptional example takes the form of a shishi -- the mythical lion-dog long revered as a guardian spirit in Japanese shrines and temples. The shishi koro was a prized object in Japanese incense culture, combining the ritual function of burning ko (incense) with the protective symbolism of the guardian beast. This handcrafted Japanese ceramic figure is modeled with remarkable energy: the head lifts on a defiant snarl, the mane swirls in tightly incised spirals, and a dramatic flame-tipped tail arcs upward over the haunches. The body hollow serves as the incense chamber, and the entire head lifts away as a removable lid -- a design detail that showcases the skill of the potter. A warm iron-brown glaze with amber and ochre highlights pools naturally into the carved recesses, lending the surface a wabi-sabi depth that only deepens with age. The figure rests on an oval lacquered wood stand that completes the presentation.
Today this vintage Japanese koro makes a commanding decorative sculpture for any living room accent shelf, tokonoma alcove, or home office display. Its compact, sculptural presence suits a Japandi style interior or a wabi-sabi aesthetic equally well -- the earthy tones and animated form draw the eye without demanding a large footprint. Displayed on a bookshelf, mantelpiece, or entry console, it functions beautifully as a standalone art object; the hollow chamber can still hold a small cone of incense if desired, bringing fragrance into the ritual once more. It makes a distinctive housewarming gift or a gift for collectors of Japanese vintage ceramics and figurative sculpture.
