Vintage Japanese Bronze Koro Incense Burner with Thatched Roof Lid, Early Showa (1927-1945) | SKU: 26M-877

A sculptural bronze koro incense burner evoking the silhouette of a traditional thatched roof -- quiet artistry cast in enduring metal.

A koro incense burner is a small lidded box used in Japan to store incense, precious keepsakes, or ceremonial items. This example is an exceptionally expressive piece of vintage Japanese metalwork: the boat-shaped bronze base -- with its elegantly upswept prow and stern -- cradles a richly textured domed lid cast to resemble the undulating surface of a thatched farmhouse roof (kayabuki). The deeply worked surface of the lid captures every crease and bundle of thatch in remarkable detail, giving the piece the presence of a small sculpture as much as a functional object. A narrow gap between lid and base allows the lid to be lifted cleanly, revealing a hollow interior suited to storing a few precious items. The overall patina is a deep, warm brown with subtle reddish highlights where the bronze catches the light -- the hallmark of a well-aged handcrafted Japanese vintage.

In a modern home, this striking koro incense burner works beautifully as a living room accent piece displayed on a coffee table or console, where its sculptural quality invites conversation. It is equally at home on a home office desk as a ring dish or small keepsake holder, or arranged alongside other wabi-sabi aesthetic objects on a shelf or tokonoma-inspired display niche. Its compact scale and deeply tactile surface make it a memorable gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone drawn to Japanese vintage decorative art with genuine character.

A rare and sculptural piece of Japanese vintage bronze craft -- where everyday function meets the poetry of traditional architecture.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
