Japanese Cha-dana Teaware Display Cabinet | Antique Curio Cabinet & Living Room Accent, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-860

A rare Early Showa tea cabinet blending art deco sensibility with classical Japanese craftsmanship -- boldly figured wood panels, shoji-lattice glass, and a painted moon-window door.

A cha-dana is a traditional Japanese display shelf or cabinet used to store and present teaware -- lacquered bowls, ceramic cups, iron kettles, and other utensils central to the chado tea ceremony. This handcrafted Japanese antique cabinet dates to the Early Showa era (1927-1945), a period when Japanese craftsmen were absorbing art deco influences from the West while maintaining distinctly Japanese decorative sensibilities. The result here is a remarkable piece: the outer frame is finished in a deep lacquered red, while the left-side door panel features a dramatically figured hardwood -- likely tamo (ash) or a similarly ripple-grained species -- set with a recessed circular moon window painted with a delicate ink landscape of grasses and trees. The right-side door is fitted with glass framed in a shoji-inspired lattice grid, offering a glimpse into the interior. A gently curved open shelf sits above, flanked by a naturalistic branch-form column, and a pull-out drawer at the base is veneered in the same richly wavy figured wood. The decorative interior lining, rendered in a speckled pattern with scattered geometric motifs, adds another layer of period charm. This is a rare example of vintage Japanese craft furniture at its most expressive.

In a modern home, this antique display cabinet is as functional as it is beautiful. Use it as a living room accent piece to showcase small ceramics, succulents, or curios -- its glass door makes it a natural display cabinet for treasured objects. It works equally well as a bedroom nightstand with built-in storage, or as a unique entryway accent table holding keys and small decor. The warm red lacquer and organic wood tones suit a Japandi style interior or wabi-sabi aesthetic beautifully, and the compact footprint means it fits comfortably in almost any room. A truly unique gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture or anyone who appreciates one-of-a-kind statement pieces.

A singular piece of Japanese antique furniture -- where tea ceremony tradition meets Early Showa artistry, ready to bring warmth, history, and quiet elegance to any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
