Japanese Chabudai Low Table | Antique Floor Coffee Table & Living Room Accent, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-582
A sculptural Early Showa chabudai with dramatically figured hardwood and graceful scroll legs -- a rare piece of handcrafted Japanese antique furniture.
A chabudai is a traditional Japanese low table used at floor level for dining, tea service, and everyday gathering in the washitsu (tatami room). This exceptional example, dating to the Early Showa period, is constructed from a boldly figured hardwood -- most likely keyaki (zelkova) -- whose swirling, river-like grain pattern dominates the wide square tabletop. The surface is finished with a deep lacquer that has mellowed beautifully with age, revealing warm amber and dark espresso tones beneath. A subtle routed border frames the top panel, adding quiet refinement to what is already a visually striking piece of vintage Japanese craft. The underside shows a single stabilizing cleat running across the center of the board, along with hand-inscribed markings consistent with workshop or household notation of the era.
In a modern home, this chabudai is as versatile as it is beautiful. Its low profile and compact square form make it ideal as a living room coffee table in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior -- simply surround it with floor cushions for an authentic, grounded feel. It also works beautifully as a bedroom accent table, a meditation room surface, or a display platform for ceramics, sculptural objects, or a curated tray arrangement. The scroll legs -- each carved with a fluid inward curl and mortise-and-tenon joinery -- give it the presence of a sculptural object in its own right, making it a standout housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture.
