Description

Japanese Kaidan Step Tansu Chest

This custom-order reference example is shown for inspiration and is not available for purchase.

This Japanese-style kaidan tansu, or step chest, combines stair-like form with built-in storage. The documented specifications identify the piece as elm wood with a natural finish, measuring 66 1/2”W x 16”D x 71 3/4”H. Its stepped silhouette incorporates drawers, sliding-door compartments, and lattice-front sections that create a functional architectural look associated with kaidan cabinetry.

Design Details

The asymmetrical stepped profile rises from a long lower section to a tall upper cabinet. Visible storage elements include multiple drawers with dark metal pulls, sliding panel compartments, and openwork lattice fronts that add texture across the facade. The natural wood finish highlights the grain and keeps the overall appearance light and clean.

About Kaidan Tansu

Kaidan tansu literally refers to stair cabinetry: a chest arranged in step form that provides storage within a tiered structure. In this custom-order reference piece, that concept is expressed through a sequence of rising compartments that balance utility with strong geometric presence.
