Japanese Kaidan Step Chest Custom-Order Reference in Natural Elm

Japanese Kaidan Step Chest Reference Example

This pictured piece is a custom-order reference example and is not available for purchase.

This Japanese kaidan, or step chest, is a four-section design documented at 70″W x 20″D x 66″H. The supplied specifications list elm with a natural finish, and the stepped arrangement combines storage with the architectural character traditionally associated with kaidan forms.

The front shows a varied composition of storage elements across the ascending sections, including lower drawers, small side drawers, a central cabinet with double doors, open shelving inside the main compartment, a pair of sliding lattice-panel doors above, and a small hinged door at the top. Black hardware provides contrast against the light wood tone and reinforces the chest's practical, built-in look.

About the Form

Kaidan literally refers to stairs or stair cabinetry in Japanese furniture. In this example, the stepped silhouette is paired with multiple storage formats, making the piece useful as both a chest and a strong visual focal point.
