This custom-order Japanese kaidan step chest is shown here as a reference example and is not available for purchase.
A kaidan tansu, or step chest, combines staircase-like form with built-in storage. This example follows that traditional stepped profile and is documented with elm construction, a dark mohagany finish, and overall measurements of 60″W x 16″D x 66″H.
The design rises in stages from a long lower section to an upper cabinet, creating the distinctive silhouette associated with a Japanese step chest. Across the front are multiple storage elements, including sliding door compartments, drawers with metal pulls, lattice-front sections, and a tall cabinet at the top. The varied compartment sizes support the practical purpose of a kaidan form while giving the piece strong architectural presence.
The warm brown finish allows the grain of the elm to remain visible, and the mix of solid panels, drawers, and openwork lattice adds texture across the facade. As a reference example, this page is intended to document the form and specifications of the custom piece pictured.
Kaidan means staircase, and in furniture it refers to a stepped chest or cabinet form that integrates storage into a stair-like arrangement. In this custom-order example, that concept is expressed through ascending platforms and a combination of doors, drawers, and cabinet compartments.
