Japanese Kaidan Step Chest
This Japanese kaidan, or step chest, is a custom-order reference piece combining stair-step form with integrated storage. The documented specifications identify it as ash wood with a clear finish, measuring 52”W x 16”D x 60”H. Its stepped profile is fitted with a mix of drawers and sliding-door compartments, giving the piece both the visual character of a kaidan chest and the practical function of organized storage.
The form rises in three levels, with banks of drawers set into the upper and lower steps and cabinet compartments built into the larger sections. The center compartment features sliding lattice-style doors, while the lower section uses broader sliding panels. Dark metal pulls and the contrasting darker case sides emphasize the stepped outline and add definition to the natural ash grain and clear finish.
Kaidan literally refers to stairs or steps in Japanese, and a kaidan chest translates that architectural shape into furniture. In this custom piece, the stepped arrangement creates a strong geometric silhouette while allowing multiple storage formats within one compact footprint.
This reference example includes several drawer banks paired with sliding-door storage below and at the center section. The varied compartment sizes suit a range of household storage needs while preserving the traditional stepped composition associated with kaidan furniture.
