Japanese Kaidan Step Chest Custom-Order Reference in Ash

Japanese Three Section Kaidan Step Chest

This custom-order reference piece is a Japanese kaidan, or step chest, shown here as an example for inspiration and discussion. Documented as a 3 sections step chest, it combines stair-step form with integrated storage in a tall, compact arrangement.

Design Overview

Kaidan step chests are designed to follow a stepped profile while incorporating drawers and sliding-door compartments into each level. In this example, the stepped silhouette rises from right to left and includes multiple storage sections, with lower drawers fitted with dark metal pulls and upper compartments enclosed by sliding panel doors. The clean, light wood appearance and clear finish emphasize the geometric structure of the form.

Form and Function

The three-section arrangement gives this kaidan a strong architectural character while also dividing storage across different heights. The lower bank of drawers offers easily reached enclosed storage, while the upper stepped compartments provide additional organization behind sliding fronts. This combination of stair form and cabinetry is what defines a kaidan in plain English: a chest built in the shape of steps.
