Japanese Kaidan Step Chest
Kaidan tansu are stair-form chests that integrate steps with drawers and compartment doors. This custom-order example has a bold stepped silhouette rising from low storage at one end to a full-height cabinet at the other, with a mix of hinged doors and multiple small drawers arranged across the front. The dark framing around lighter wood panels gives the piece a strong graphic outline that emphasizes the ascending form.
The manually documented specifications identify this piece as a two-section step chest measuring 60″W x 16″D x 72″H, made of elm and ash with a dark mahogany and clear finish. The photographs also show inset pulls, paneled doors, and a layout designed to make practical use of each step level for storage.

Design Notes
This reference piece uses the classic kaidan idea in a clean, custom architectural format. The lower section incorporates broader compartments, while the middle area includes small drawers and doors for more divided storage. The upper section continues the stepped ascent into taller vertical cabinet space, making the overall composition both functional and sculptural.
