Japanese Hagata Tray Leaf-Shaped Tray | Incense Holder & Desk Organizer, 1966-1989 (Late Showa), SKU 26M-852-1

A handcrafted Japanese wooden tray sculpted in the form of a feather leaf, finished in a deep lacquer-toned glaze.

A hagata (leaf-shaped) tray is a traditional Japanese decorative object in which a craftsman carves or molds wood into the naturalistic form of a leaf or feather, celebrating the wabi-sabi aesthetic of finding beauty in organic shapes. This elongated tray features a precisely rendered central midrib with finely incised herringbone veins fanning outward across the entire surface -- a hallmark of handcrafted Japanese craft from the Late Showa period. The gently undulating rim traces the silhouette of a feather with remarkable fidelity, while the underside is finished smooth with a deep reddish-brown lacquer-style coating that deepens to near-black at the edges. The warm, dark finish and tactile surface texture make this a standout example of vintage Japanese decorative woodwork.

In a modern home, this slender tray adapts beautifully to a variety of living room accent and home office storage uses. Lay it across a coffee table or sideboard as a catch-all for rings, hair pins, or small keys -- a refined alternative to a standard jewelry dish. It works equally well as an incense stick holder or incense tray on a meditation altar or bathroom shelf, lending a Japandi style calm to any setting. On a writing desk it can organize pens, a letter opener, or small stationery in minimalist decor style. A unique housewarming gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture and decorative objects.

A beautifully sculptural piece of vintage Japanese decorative craft -- equally at home as a functional tray or a striking living room accent in any wabi-sabi or Japandi-inspired interior.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
