Vintage Japanese Kamakura Style Red Lacquer Box with Carved Floral & Bamboo Motif, 1966-1989 (Late Showa) | SKU: 26M-852-4

A richly carved vintage Japanese lacquer stacking box in deep translucent red, decorated with raised floral, bamboo, and landscape motifs.

A Japanese lacquer box, often referred to as a shikki or nurimono storage box, is a traditional wooden vessel finished with layers of lacquer to create a durable, glossy, and refined surface. This vintage Japanese lacquer box dates to the Late Showa period (1966-1989) and features a beautiful red lacquer finish with a subtle wood-grain-like texture visible beneath the surface. The lid is intricately carved with seasonal floral motifs, bamboo leaves, and a quiet landscape scene, giving the piece a graceful sense of depth and movement. The low rectangular form is elegant and practical, with softly rounded corners and a fitted lid that rests neatly over the base.

The interior is finished in deep glossy black lacquer, creating a striking contrast with the warm red exterior. A separate black inner tray or divider with small handles is also included, making the piece useful for organizing smaller items. In a modern home, this lacquer box works beautifully as a decorative storage piece for jewelry, keepsakes, tea accessories, stationery, or small collectibles. It can also be displayed on a console, bookshelf, sideboard, or coffee table as a refined accent piece for Japandi, wabi-sabi, traditional Japanese, or eclectic interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
