Vintage Japanese Red Lacquer Round Tray with Carved Botan Peony Motif, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26M-852-3

A richly colored vintage Japanese round lacquer tray with a deep red finish, carved botan peony design, and contrasting black lacquer underside.

A Japanese lacquer tray, known as a bon or nurimono tray, is traditionally used for serving tea, sweets, small dishes, or ceremonial items while also serving as a decorative object in the home. This vintage Japanese round tray dates to the Late Showa period (1966-1989) and features a lustrous translucent red lacquer finish that reveals subtle wood grain and textured surface movement beneath the glossy coating. The front is decorated with a deeply carved botan peony motif, a beloved Japanese floral symbol associated with elegance, prosperity, and refined beauty. The raised rim gives the tray a balanced, practical form, while the carved floral detail adds depth and visual richness.

The reverse side is finished in deep black lacquer with visible circular brush-like grain patterns, creating a beautiful contrast against the red rim. In a modern home, this tray works wonderfully as a decorative display piece on a console, coffee table, sideboard, or entryway surface. It may also be used as a catch-all tray for keys and small objects, a display base for ceramics or ikebana, or a refined serving tray for dry items. Its warm red tone and floral carving make it especially suitable for Japandi, wabi-sabi, traditional Japanese, or eclectic interiors.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
