Vintage Japanese Black Lacquer Gold Maki-e Jubako (Stacking Boxes) Set of Two with Kiri Wood Storage Boxes, Late Showa (1990-2018) | SKU: 26M-606

A matched pair of lacquered jubako in rich black and gold maki-e, each stored in its original kiri wood box -- a collector-quality set for the table or the home.

A jubako is a traditional Japanese stacking lacquerware box used to hold celebratory foods at New Year (osechi) and other festive occasions. This set comprises two jubako of differing sizes, each built from multiple stackable tiers finished in deep black urushi-style lacquer with vivid red lacquered interiors. The exterior surfaces are decorated in fine gold maki-e depicting a dramatic scene of aged pine, plum blossom, and bamboo -- the classic "sho-chiku-bai" motif representing longevity, resilience, and good fortune. The larger box carries the design across all tiers as a continuous landscape, while the smaller box bears a bold circular mon (family crest) rendered in gold on its lid. Both pieces come stored in their original natural wood storage boxes, one bearing a brushed inscription identifying the kiln or maker, with bamboo cord binding -- hallmarks of a carefully preserved, presentation-grade set.

Beyond their original ceremonial use, these jubako make a stunning living room accent or dining table centerpiece for anyone drawn to Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic. The smaller box works beautifully as a jewelry box or keepsake organizer on a bedroom dresser, while the larger set can serve as a striking decorative accent on a sideboard or entryway console. Displayed together or separately, they would make an exceptional housewarming gift or a meaningful addition to any collection of vintage Japanese craft and lacquerware.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
