Vintage Japanese Jubako Tiered Lacquer Stacking Box, Late Showa (1966-1989) | SKU: 26M-008-6
A boldly lacquered vintage jubako in classic kuro-nuri black over a rich vermilion interior -- timeless Japanese craft for the modern home.
A jubako is a traditional Japanese tiered stacking box, used for centuries to present celebratory foods -- most famously osechi ryori, the elaborately arranged New Year's feast -- as well as sweets and seasonal delicacies at tea gatherings and festivals. This handcrafted Japanese vintage lacquerware example features multiple stackable tiers, each finished in a deep, mirror-polished kuro-nuri (black lacquer) on the exterior and a vivid aka-nuri (red lacquer) on the interior -- the classic and most auspicious color pairing in Japanese lacquer tradition. The squared form with softly rounded corners and the seamless, unadorned exterior surface reflect the restrained aesthetic sensibility of Late Showa-era craft, when clean lines and quality of finish were prized over elaborate decoration. The high-gloss lacquer finish on the lid shows a subtle mottled depth when light catches it, hinting at the careful layering technique typical of quality vintage Japanese lacquerware.
Today, this vintage jubako makes a striking living room accent or dining table centerpiece -- use each tier to display curated jewelry, small keepsakes, or trinkets for a Japandi-style bedroom decor statement. It works equally well as a desk organizer on a home office shelf, corralling small items in style, or as a gift box for a unique housewarming gift. Stacked, the cube-like silhouette is a sculptural object in its own right; separated, the individual tiers become elegant catch-all trays. Its wabi-sabi aesthetic -- rich in age and quiet refinement -- fits effortlessly alongside both minimalist decor and mid-century modern interiors.
