Vintage Japanese Lacquered Jubako Stacking Box, Early Showa (1927-1945) | SKU: 26M-905
A richly lacquered jubako in deep oxblood red, carved on every surface with lush peony and foliage motifs -- a rare and striking example of vintage Japanese craft.
A jubako is a traditional Japanese stacking box used to present celebratory foods during festivals and special occasions such as New Year (oshogatsu). Crafted from a wood core and finished in deep crimson lacquer, this Early Showa example features two stacking tray layers beneath a fitted lid, each tier decorated with densely carved relief motifs of peonies, buds, scrolling vines, and broad leaves wrapping continuously around all four sides. The lid's top panel showcases a full-face peony bloom framed by trailing foliage -- a symbol of prosperity and good fortune in Japanese decorative arts. The interior of each tray is finished in a warm matte red, offering a pleasing contrast to the glossy carved exterior. The seamless coverage of ornament across every panel reflects the confident craftsmanship characteristic of Japanese vintage lacquerware from this era.
Today this jubako is as versatile as it is beautiful. Its compact, square footprint and stacking structure make it an ideal jewelry box or bedroom decor accent -- use each tier to organize rings, earrings, and small keepsakes. On a home office desk it works equally well as a stylish storage box for stationery, cards, or personal mementos. The deep oxblood lacquer and hand-carved botanical relief bring an unmistakable wabi-sabi aesthetic and Japandi style warmth to any living room shelf or entryway console. It also makes a distinctive housewarming gift or a gift for collectors of Japanese vintage lacquerware.
