Vintage Japanese Imari-Style Kasane-Jubako (Danju) Stacking Porcelain Boxes with Wooden Storage Box, Late Showa 1966-1989 | SKU: 26M-126

A vibrant Imari-style kasane-jubako in bold cobalt, coral-red, and celadon green -- presented in its original wooden storage box.

A kasane-jubako is a set of stacking lidded porcelain boxes used in Japanese dining culture to serve layered courses of food, most famously during New Year celebrations (osechi ryori) and formal kaiseki gatherings. This vintage set is decorated in a rich Imari-inspired palette -- deep cobalt blue grounds frame oval reserve panels painted with stylized chrysanthemum and peony motifs in vivid iron-red and celadon green, with fine gold accent lines adding warmth and refinement. Each tier stacks snugly onto the next, topped by a domed lid bearing a matching all-over floral composition. The interiors are finished in a clean bright white glaze, keeping the focus entirely on the spectacular exterior decoration. A blue underglaze maker's mark is visible on the base of each tier, consistent with a reputable Japanese porcelain studio of the Late Showa period. The set retains its original wooden storage box, brushed with calligraphy identifying the contents -- a rare and desirable survival that adds both provenance and display value.

In a modern home, this kasane-jubako set is as versatile as it is beautiful. Stacked in its full tower form, it makes a commanding living room accent or dining room centerpiece in a Japandi-style or maximalist-eclectic interior -- the jewel-toned palette holds its own against neutral linen, rattan, and raw wood. Separated into individual tiers, each bowl becomes a striking catchall tray on a vanity or bedside table, a jewelry dish, or a small condiment server for an elegant dinner party. The wooden storage box doubles as a display object in its own right. This set would make an exceptional gift for collectors of Japanese ceramics, a memorable housewarming gift, or a treasured addition to any curated shelfscape.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
