Japanese Chinretsu-bako Glass Display Case | Collector Cabinet & Living Room Accent, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-912-2
A handcrafted Japanese vintage display cabinet with washi-lined interior, natural branch support, and mon medallion backpanel -- a rare survivor of Early Showa craft tradition.
A chinretsu-bako is a traditional Japanese display case used to showcase prized small objects -- netsuke, okimono, lacquerware, ceramics, and other treasured keepsakes -- in shops, tea rooms, and private collections. This fine example, dating to the Early Showa period (1927-1945), features a lacquered hardwood frame finished in a deep reddish-brown, glazed on the front and sides to allow views from multiple angles. The interior is lined with a beautifully aged washi paper decorated with a delicate scattered-straw (chirashi) pattern in cream and gold, lending the cabinet an unmistakably Japanese aesthetic. A single glass shelf divides the interior into display levels, and a rustic natural branch -- likely cherry or similar -- serves as a sculptural divider and shelf support, reflecting the Japanese wabi-sabi love of unrefined natural form within a refined setting. A painted circular mon medallion with floral motifs applied to the back wall adds a distinctive decorative focal point. The side-hinged glass door is secured by a small turned bone or ivory-toned clasp. The rear panel is covered in aged fabric or paper in warm amber tones. This is a well-preserved example of handcrafted Japanese vintage furniture from the interwar era.
Today, this chinretsu-bako makes a stunning living room accent or bedroom decor piece for displaying jewelry, crystals, small sculptures, or curated collectibles. Its compact footprint suits a shelf, console table, or sideboard in a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. The all-glass sides make it equally effective as a tabletop terrarium-style display or a countertop showcase for a home office. It would make a truly unique gift for collectors, Japanophiles, or anyone who appreciates handcrafted Japanese craft with genuine character and patina.
