Vintage Japanese Haribako Sewing Box, Early Showa 1927-1945 | SKU: 26M-709-2
A beautifully figured burl-veneered haribako with a lift-top compartment and multiple pull-out drawers -- a rare survivor of pre-war Japanese domestic craft.
A haribako is a traditional Japanese sewing box used to store needles, thread, thimbles, and other needlework essentials. Crafted during the Early Showa period, this handsome example is faced throughout in a richly swirling burl veneer -- possibly tochi (horse chestnut) or a similarly figured Japanese hardwood -- laid over a solid wood carcass. The lift-top opens on a hidden hinge to reveal a shallow, divided interior tray ideal for small notions, while multiple pull-out drawers below offer graduated storage in a compact, desktop-friendly footprint. Each drawer front is fitted with a rounded brass knob, their patinated surfaces adding warmth and age to the overall composition. The clean-lined silhouette and restrained ornamentation are characteristic of the quietly modernizing aesthetic that defined Japanese domestic objects of the 1930s and early 1940s.
Today this vintage Japanese craft box translates effortlessly into contemporary living. On a bedroom dresser it makes a stunning jewelry box, its divided tray perfectly sized for rings and earrings while the drawers hold bracelets and watches. On a home office desk it serves as a refined desktop organizer -- pens, clips, and small stationery in the drawers, a charging cable tucked discreetly inside the lid. It also works beautifully as a bathroom organizer for grooming essentials, or simply displayed as a wabi-sabi accent piece on a shelf or entryway console. A thoughtful housewarming gift or unique find for collectors of Japanese vintage furniture, it suits Japandi-style interiors as naturally as it did the shoen (domestic rooms) of wartime Japan.
