Japanese Ko Tansu Small Chest | Antique Storage Cabinet & Entryway Sideboard, 1927-1945 (Early Showa), SKU 26M-G030
A handcrafted Japanese antique chest of remarkable depth -- combining hinged cabinet doors concealing hidden interior drawers with a generous array of pull-out drawers below, all in warm straight-grained wood.
A ko tansu is a traditional Japanese small chest, historically used in homes and merchant establishments to organize documents, valuables, and household goods in a compact yet highly functional form. This Early Showa-period example is a particularly fine specimen of handcrafted Japanese antique furniture, built from straight-grained wood consistent with kiri (paulownia) or a similar domestic softwood, finished to a warm honey tone that has deepened beautifully with age. The front elevation is divided into an upper register of hinged cabinet doors -- each with a raised molded panel and cast metal drop handles -- and a lower register of pull-out drawers fitted with arched brass bail pulls. The joinery throughout is precise and confident, with flush-fitting drawer faces and cleanly mitred moldings that speak to a skilled regional craftsman working in the restrained aesthetic of the early Showa period.
What makes this ko tansu especially captivating is its interior: opening the upper cabinet doors reveals a nested arrangement of additional small drawers -- a cabinet-within-a-cabinet -- offering an almost theatrical reveal of hidden storage. One drawer retains its original skeleton key, a lovely detail that adds to the piece's authenticity and collector appeal. In a modern home, this chest works beautifully as an entryway console or living room accent, with the upper cabinets storing anything from linens to bar accessories and the outer drawers handling everyday essentials. It would also make a striking bedroom dresser or home office storage unit in a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. A truly unique housewarming gift for collectors or Japanophiles who appreciate the artistry of vintage Japanese craft.
