Japanese Chabudai Folding Low Table | Antique Floor Dining Table & Living Room Coffee Table, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-013

A large round folding chabudai in rich dark hardwood -- a rare and impressive survivor from Taisho-era Japan.

A chabudai is a traditional Japanese low dining table designed for use on tatami floors, around which family members would gather seated on zabuton cushions or in seiza posture. This handsome example features a generously sized round top assembled from planks of dark-stained hardwood -- the straight, close grain visible across the surface is consistent with nara (Japanese oak) or a similar dense hardwood commonly used for larger tables of this period. The top displays the warm amber-brown tones and surface character that come only with genuine age and daily use, making it a fine example of handcrafted Japanese antique furniture from the Taisho era. The gently splayed, slightly curved legs add quiet elegance to an otherwise restrained design, reflecting the refined domestic aesthetic of early twentieth-century Japan.

What makes this chabudai especially collectible is its well-preserved folding mechanism: the underside reveals a robust mortise-and-tenon frame construction with hinged leg supports that fold flat, allowing the table to be stored upright or moved between rooms with ease -- a practical feature treasured in the flexible, multi-use spaces of traditional Japanese homes. In a modern living room, this table works beautifully as a low coffee table or floor seating accent, perfect for a Japandi style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior. It also makes an eye-catching bedroom decor piece beside a floor-level futon, or a distinctive centerpiece for a tea ceremony corner or meditation space. A truly unique housewarming gift for collectors and Japanophiles who appreciate authentic vintage Japanese craft with genuine character.

A rare large-format Japanese antique chabudai that brings the warmth of Taisho-era craftsmanship and wabi-sabi beauty into any modern home.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer antiques that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage and antique items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
