Antique Japanese Chabudai Low Table with Drawer, Taisho Era 1912-1926 | SKU: 26J-0742
A dramatically grained keyaki low table with drawer -- handcrafted Japanese antique furniture at its most expressive.
A chabudai is a traditional Japanese low table designed for floor-level living, used in the sitting room for meals, tea, writing, and conversation. This exceptional example, dating to the Taisho era (1912-1926), showcases keyaki (zelkova) wood at its most striking -- the top panel displays bold, sweeping grain that swirls and eddies across the entire surface like brushwork in ink, a quality prized by Japanese craftsmen above almost any decorative finish. The gently splayed legs taper with quiet elegance, their subtle curves betraying the period's characteristic blend of classical Japanese proportion and Western-influenced refinement. Small metal corner brackets reinforce the leg junctions, a practical detail that speaks to the care taken in the original construction of this handcrafted Japanese antique furniture piece.
At just eleven inches tall, this chabudai is perfectly suited to floor seating and low-living arrangements, yet its compact footprint and extraordinary top surface make it equally compelling as a living room accent in any modern home. Use it as a low coffee table in a Japandi-style or wabi-sabi aesthetic interior, where the richly figured keyaki grain becomes the focal point of the room. It works beautifully as a floor desk for cushion seating, a display platform for ceramics and botanicals, or a bedside table in a minimalist bedroom decor setting. The wide pull-out drawer -- fitted with a brass bar pull and lined with lighter secondary wood -- adds discreet everyday storage, making this a rare combination of visual drama and quiet utility. A thoughtful housewarming gift or statement piece for collectors of antique Japanese craft.
