Japanese Kyodai Dressing Table | Antique Bedroom Vanity & Entryway Mirror, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-537
A rare Taisho-era kyodai with a full-length tilting mirror, boldly figured hardwood, and delicate carved leaf motifs -- an heirloom-quality piece of Japanese antique furniture.
A kyodai is a traditional Japanese dressing table -- a low storage cabinet surmounted by a freestanding tilting mirror used for grooming and applying cosmetics. This handcrafted Japanese kyodai dates to the Taisho period (1912-1926), an era when Western design influences began to blend with classical Japanese joinery, producing furniture of exceptional refinement. The cabinet base is constructed from a boldly grained hardwood, possibly keyaki (zelkova), whose swirling, flame-like figure is displayed to striking effect across the drawer fronts and door panel. The full-length mirror swivels on side pegs set into elegantly tapered uprights, and the back panel of the mirror frame reveals the same dramatic wood grain in reverse. Most charming are the carved and pierced decorative rails connecting the mirror uprights to the cabinet -- each features a trailing vine of stylized maple leaves rendered in light-toned inlay or applied carving, a motif associated in Japanese craft with the beauty of the changing seasons.
Today this kyodai makes a stunning statement piece for bedroom decor, functioning as a full-length mirror and compact dresser in one. Its warm honey-brown tones and wabi-sabi aesthetic suit Japandi style interiors beautifully, where it pairs naturally with linen textiles and natural wood accents. The multiple drawers and side compartments offer surprisingly practical storage for jewelry, hair accessories, or small keepsakes, making it equally at home as a bedroom organizer or an entryway furniture accent where keys, scarves, and daily essentials can be neatly tucked away. It would make a truly unique housewarming gift or a treasured find for collectors of vintage Japanese furniture and Asian antiques.
