Japanese Kabin Bronze Vase | Ikebana Flower Vase & Living Room Accent, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-906
A boldly sculptural cast bronze ikebana vase adorned with cascading grapevines, leaves, and grape clusters in high relief -- a striking example of Taisho-era Japanese antique metalwork.
A kabin is a traditional Japanese flower vase used to display ikebana, the refined art of floral arrangement, in the tokonoma (alcove) of a formal room or tea space. This substantial globular vase, almost certainly cast bronze with a dark patinated finish, was crafted during the Taisho era -- a period known for its embrace of both naturalistic motifs and vigorous three-dimensional sculptural technique. The body features a deliberately coarse, pebbled texture across the shoulder and belly, creating a dramatic contrast against the smooth, polished neck and foot ring. Wrapping organically around the entire circumference, deeply cast grapevine branches carry large lobed leaves and pendulous clusters of rounded grapes -- each berry individually modeled with care. The underside bears an impressed decorative seal mark in a square cartouche surrounded by geometric patterning, consistent with workshop-stamped Japanese antique bronzework of the period. The grape motif -- known as budo -- was a popular auspicious symbol in Japanese decorative arts, associated with abundance and fertility.
Today this handcrafted Japanese bronze vase makes an exceptional statement piece in any modern interior. Display it as a living room accent on a console or sideboard, where its dark, earthy tones complement Japandi style and wabi-sabi aesthetic decor. It works beautifully as a standalone sculptural object without flowers, or use it as an ikebana vase for a single dramatic stem arrangement. Its bold organic relief also makes it a compelling focal point on a bookshelf or entryway table. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique bronzework -- one that brings a century of craft history into a contemporary home.
