Vintage Japanese Tosei-Gusoku "Modern Armor" (Full Samurai Armor Suit), Heisei era (1990-2018) | SKU: 26M-0627

A commanding full tosei-gusoku in matte black lacquer, richly appointed with indigo silk brocade, grey odoshi lacing, and a bold gold kamon on the do -- a masterwork of Japanese martial craft tradition.

A tosei-gusoku is a complete suit of Japanese samurai armor, encompassing every element from the kabuto (helmet) down to the suneate (shin guards). This exceptional set is crafted in the style of the great sengoku-era warrior lords, finished throughout in a deep matte black lacquer that gives the suit its fearsome, unified presence. The kabuto features a distinctive crescent-shaped maedate (front crest) in aged reddish-brown, flanked by broad fukigaeshi (turned-back brim wings) and fitted with a mengu (face mask) lacquered in the same deep black, complete with a sculpted open-mouthed expression, articulated teeth, painted red inner lip detail, and a striking natural horsehair mustache. The do (cuirass) is constructed from overlapping horizontal lames of lacquered iron-style plates, its centerpiece an oversized gold-painted kamon -- a crossed-arrow design within a circle -- that immediately signals high-ranking warrior identity. The osode (shoulder guards) and kusazuri (hip tassets) are assembled in the classic kozane (small-scale) style, each row of lacquered plates bound together with dense grey odoshi braided silk cord, a hallmark of handcrafted Japanese armor construction. Broad sleeves of deep indigo silk brocade with an allover floral pattern complete the silhouette, adding color and aristocratic refinement to the otherwise austere black palette. A brocade-wrapped koshi-obi (waist cord) ties the ensemble together with warmth and texture.

In a modern home, this full yoroi suit makes an extraordinary living room accent or entryway statement piece -- the kind of commanding display that stops visitors in their tracks. Mounted on its included armor stand, it brings an unmistakable Japandi-style drama to a study, library, media room, or dedicated Japanese decor space. It is equally at home in a martial arts dojo, a photography studio as a cosplay or film prop, or an office seeking a bold conversation piece. This is the ultimate unique gift for Japanophiles, samurai history enthusiasts, and serious collectors of Japanese vintage armor and wearable heritage crafts. Each detail -- from the mengu's bared teeth to the precisely knotted odoshi lacing -- reflects the disciplined artistry that has defined Japanese armor-making for centuries.

As part of our mission to preserve and share Japanese craftsmanship, we offer vintage pieces that were made not just to be admired, but to be used. These pieces were crafted for everyday life, and we honor their purpose by ensuring they can continue to be enjoyed and lived with today.

We use professional studio lighting to highlight the natural character of the wood. As a result, the tone may appear slightly warmer than under natural daylight.

All vintage items are sold as-is. Each piece may exhibit signs of age, including scratches, wear, or minor imperfections. These are not considered defects but natural evidence of the item’s authenticity and age.
