Vintage Japanese Hikidashi Two-Drawer Desktop Chest, Heisei 1990-2018 | SKU: 26M-533-6
A compact double-drawer keepsake chest in deep lacquered wood -- handcrafted Japanese desktop storage at its most refined.
A ko-dansu is a small Japanese chest used for storing personal valuables, stationery, or household sundries close at hand. This charming example, dating to the Mid Showa period (1946-1965), features two smooth-sliding drawers set into a neatly proportioned rectangular carcass raised on a stepped plinth base. The exterior is finished in a rich, deep reddish-brown that accentuates the pronounced straight grain of the wood -- consistent with sugi (Japanese cedar) or a similarly grained softwood stained and lacquered for daily use. Each drawer is fitted with a turned wooden knob pull in a matching dark tone, lending the piece a quiet, unified elegance. The drawer interiors are left in natural unfinished wood, revealing the fine parallel grain and honest construction typical of handcrafted Japanese craft from this postwar era.
This vintage Japanese mini chest translates effortlessly into today's interiors. Use it on a bedroom dresser as a jewelry box -- rings, earrings, and bracelets slip neatly into each drawer. On a home office desk it becomes a compact desktop organizer for stationery, SD cards, or small tools. In a bathroom or vanity nook it corrals hair accessories or skincare items with quiet Japandi style. Its compact footprint and warm wabi-sabi aesthetic make it an equally appealing living room accent on a bookshelf or side table. A thoughtful housewarming gift or gift for Japanophiles who appreciate the understated beauty of vintage Japanese craft.
