Japanese Hikidashi Drawer | Vintage Desk Organizer & Jewelry Box, 1990-2018 (Heisai), SKU 26M-555-5
A compact hikidashi drawer chest in richly grained hardwood -- handcrafted Japanese antique storage with timeless wabi-sabi appeal.
A hikidashi is a small-format Japanese chest of drawers, traditionally used to store personal effects, documents, medicines, or valuables within the home. This handsome Heisei example is built from a boldly grained, deep reddish-brown hardwood -- possibly kaki (persimmon) -- whose interlocking linear figure deepens beautifully under lacquer. The front face and sides share the same warm auburn tone, while the unfinished back panel reveals a lighter secondary wood typical of Japanese cabinet construction of this era, offering a glimpse into the honest joinery beneath the polished exterior. Softly rounded corner moldings frame the carcass and give the piece a refined, tactile quality consistent with skilled Japanese antique furniture craftsmanship of the postwar period.
Today, this compact ko-hikidashi translates effortlessly into a modern interior. Placed on a desk or home office shelf, its pull-out hikidashi drawers -- each fitted with a cast metal bail handle bearing a fluted shell rosette -- make a characterful home office storage solution for stationery, cables, or small tools. On a bedroom dresser or bathroom shelf, it doubles as a jewelry box or vanity organizer with genuine vintage Japanese craft appeal. Its cube-like proportions and Japandi-style warmth also make it a striking living room accent -- displayed on a console or bookshelf alongside ceramics or plants. A thoughtful housewarming gift or gift for collectors of Japanese antique furniture.
