Vintage Japanese Hikidashi Three-Drawer Chest, Mid Showa 1946-1965 | SKU: 26M-533-7
A compact handcrafted drawer chest with painted floral decoration -- a wabi-sabi treasure for the modern home.
This is a small personal storage chest used in traditional Japanese households to organize keepsakes, cosmetics, correspondence, and other intimate belongings. This charming mid-century example is crafted from boldly grained hardwood -- most likely keyaki (zelkova) -- finished in a warm reddish-brown tone that beautifully showcases the wood's sweeping, dramatic grain. The exterior is adorned with a delicate hand-painted floral composition spanning the lower drawer fronts: a meadow scene of red and white blossoms, grasses, and berry-laden branches rendered in careful polychrome detail, with a small maker's seal visible on the lowest panel. Each drawer is fitted with a cast metal ring pull with decorative floral rosette mounts, lending the piece an elegant period character consistent with quality Japanese vintage furniture of the post-war era.
This vintage Japanese hikidashi translates effortlessly into today's interiors. Its compact cube-like form makes it an ideal jewelry box or bedside organizer -- store rings, watches, and hair accessories in the pull-out drawers for a touch of Japandi style in any bedroom decor. On a desk or vanity it serves as a charming home office storage accent for stationery, stamps, or small keepsakes. The painted floral panels also make it a standout living room accent piece displayed on a console or shelf. A truly unique housewarming gift or gift for collectors who appreciate handcrafted Japanese craft with genuine character and age.
