Japanese Tansu Style Merchant Chest
In Japanese furniture, tansu refers broadly to cabinetry and chests designed for practical storage. This merchant-chest style example is arranged as a vertical case with several smaller drawers above and larger drawers below, a layout well suited to organizing a range of contents while keeping a compact footprint.
The documented specifications identify this piece as made from re-claimed wood with a rosewood finish. The photographed example shows a warm reddish-brown surface, prominent grain patterns, and dark hardware details including corner mounts, drawer pulls, and ornamental escutcheon-style plates that reinforce the tansu-inspired look.
The tall proportions and graduated drawer arrangement give the chest a strong architectural presence while supporting everyday storage use. The upper drawers offer smaller compartments, while the lower drawers provide larger storage areas within the same cabinet body.
