This Japanese tansu style merchant chest is a tall storage cabinet form documented at 36”W x 16”D x 42”H, made of elm wood with a clear finish. The design combines drawers and sliding-door storage in a compact, upright case, reflecting the practical layout associated with merchant chests. In plain English, tansu refers to traditional Japanese cabinetry designed for organized household or business storage.
Design Details
The chest presents a warm wood surface accented by dark metal corner hardware and drop pulls. The front is arranged with upper and middle drawers, slatted sliding-door compartments, and a small hinged door at the right side, creating multiple storage zones within a relatively narrow footprint. A close view also shows the drawer interior and side-mounted hardware, adding useful reference for the cabinet's construction and proportions.
