Japanese Tansu Style Merchant Chest Custom-Order Reference

Japanese Tansu Style Merchant Chest

Custom-order reference example; the pictured piece is shown for inspiration and is not available for purchase.

This Japanese tansu style merchant chest is a custom-order reference piece documented with a compact square format, kiri wood construction, and a teak finish. Measuring 47 1/4"W x 12"D x 47 1/4"H, it presents the look of a traditional merchant chest with a mix of drawers and sliding-door compartments arranged across the front.

In Japanese furniture, tansu refers broadly to cabinetry and chests designed for storage. Merchant chests are known for organizing many small household or business items, and this example reflects that function through its varied drawer sizes, sliding panels, and prominent black hardware.

Design Details

The front is organized with multiple sliding-door sections above and below, several mid-sized drawers, a bank of smaller drawers, and a side compartment door accented by round black pulls and ring hardware. The shallow 12-inch depth gives the piece a space-conscious profile while still providing substantial face storage across its width.

The supplied reference images also show the chest installed in a wall opening, illustrating how this custom-order design can function as a built-in style storage feature while retaining the visual language of a traditional tansu-inspired merchant chest.
