Japanese Isho Tansu Clothing Chest | Antique Bedroom Dresser & Entryway Storage, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-A013
A stately three-section kimono tansu in warm kiri wood -- an heirloom-quality piece of Japanese antique furniture with generous storage and quietly refined craftsmanship.
An isho tansu is a traditional Japanese clothing chest designed specifically to store folded kimono and fine textiles, keeping them safe from moisture and pests. This handcrafted Japanese isho tansu dates to the Taisho period (1912-1926), an era that saw regional craftsmen refine the tansu form to its practical and aesthetic peak. Constructed in lightweight kiri (paulownia) -- the preferred wood for clothing storage due to its natural moisture resistance and insulating properties -- the chest is composed of three stackable sections secured by iron corner fittings along the sides, a hallmark of the classic san-dan (three-tier) tansu tradition. The warm honey tone of the kiri has deepened beautifully with age, and the straight, fine grain reads as calm and refined against the bold iron hardware. The upper section features sliding panel doors with raised-panel detailing and decorative iron escutcheons, alongside a pair of small pull-out drawers and a hinged side cabinet that opens to reveal shelved interior compartments -- ideal for folded obi or accessories. The middle and lower sections offer a series of deep, full-width drawers, each fitted with a central lock boss and a pair of arched iron bail pulls, providing ample storage for a complete kimono wardrobe.
In a modern home, this isho tansu makes an exceptional statement piece for bedroom decor -- serving as a tall dresser or clothing storage chest with far more character than anything produced today. Its generous drawer depth handles folded sweaters, linens, and layered textiles with ease, while the upper cabinet compartments are perfect for displaying small objects, storing jewelry, or organizing seasonal accessories. As entryway furniture, the chest provides a striking focal point alongside a mirror, with the lower drawers handling scarves, gloves, and bags. The warm kiri tones and wabi-sabi aesthetic of the aged iron hardware pair naturally with Japandi style interiors, mid-century modern rooms, or any space that values honest materials and quiet craftsmanship. A truly unique gift for collectors or Japanophiles who appreciate living with history.
