Japanese Isho Tansu Kimono Chest | Antique Wardrobe & Bedroom Armoire, 1912-1926 (Taisho), SKU 26M-A061
A commanding two-section isho tansu in richly aged sugi, with a lockable upper cabinet concealing multiple pull-out kimono shelves above a lower bank of graduated drawers -- a rare and complete example of Japanese antique furniture from the Taisho period.
An isho tansu is a traditional Japanese clothing chest designed specifically to store folded kimono and formal garments. Unlike a standard tansu with simple drawers, the isho tansu features a distinctive upper cabinet section fitted with a series of wide, shallow pull-out shelves -- each sized to accept a neatly folded kimono without creasing the silk. This example, dating to the Taisho era (1912-1926), is constructed from sugi (Japanese cedar) finished in a deep amber-brown patina that only deepens with age. The upper cabinet is secured by a decorative cast-metal locking hasp with an ornate pierced escutcheon and retains its original key with silk tassel -- an unusually complete survival. Engraved corner fittings anchor each face of the upper section, while the lower section carries graduated drawers fitted with cast-metal ring pulls, each centered on a small round stud. The straight, pronounced grain of the sugi runs continuously across the door panels and drawer fronts, lending the piece a quiet, meditative rhythm consistent with the wabi-sabi aesthetic of its era. The interior shelves slide smoothly and are finished in a contrasting lighter wood, revealing the care and craftsmanship invested by the original maker.
In a modern home, this handcrafted Japanese isho tansu earns its place far beyond the bedroom. Stand it in a master bedroom as a striking wardrobe alternative or linen cabinet -- the multiple interior shelves are perfectly proportioned for folded sweaters, scarves, or linens, while the lower drawers handle everyday essentials. In a living room or entryway, the chest reads as a bold statement piece of Japanese antique furniture, its warm cedar tones complementing both Japandi-style interiors and mid-century modern settings. Collectors and Japanophiles will appreciate the intact hardware and original key, making this an exceptional housewarming gift or centerpiece acquisition for anyone drawn to authentic vintage Japanese craft. The two-section design also allows the upper and lower halves to be used independently in different rooms if desired.
