Japanese Isho Tansu Clothing Chest | Antique Kimono Storage Cabinet & Bedroom Dresser, Taisho to Early Showa Period | SKU 26M-A013
A beautifully proportioned Japanese isho tansu in warm kiri wood — a refined antique clothing chest with layered storage, sliding doors, drawers, and interior trays for kimono and textiles.
An isho tansu is a traditional Japanese clothing chest designed to store kimono, obi, and folded garments. This antique Japanese isho tansu features a highly functional multi-section layout, combining sliding upper doors, small accessory drawers, hinged cabinet doors, pull-out interior trays, and two deep lower drawers. Constructed from lightweight kiri wood, prized in Japan for clothing storage because of its natural resistance to moisture and humidity, the chest displays a warm honey tone and fine vertical grain that have aged beautifully over time.
The upper section is fitted with two sliding panel doors, each with recessed circular pulls, offering enclosed storage for folded textiles or smaller household items. Below the sliding doors are three small drawers with iron bail pulls, ideal for accessories, jewelry, cords, documents, or personal items. The central cabinet opens with a pair of hinged doors featuring decorative iron fittings, revealing multiple shallow pull-out trays designed for organized textile storage. These trays would have been especially useful for kimono, obi, or fine garments, allowing items to be stacked neatly while remaining easy to access. The lower portion contains two large full-width drawers, each fitted with iron handles and a central lock fitting, providing generous storage for clothing, linens, blankets, or seasonal items.
In a modern home, this antique Japanese tansu works beautifully as a bedroom dresser, linen cabinet, entryway storage piece, or living room accent cabinet. The combination of small drawers, large drawers, hidden trays, and cabinet compartments makes it both decorative and highly practical. Its warm kiri wood, aged iron hardware, and quiet architectural form pair naturally with Japandi, wabi-sabi, rustic, traditional, or minimalist interiors. Whether used for clothing, textiles, table linens, personal accessories, or display storage, this piece brings the timeless craftsmanship of Japanese furniture into everyday life.
